IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN

I am referring to the ‘where is my child going to play next year?’ time of year - the time of tryouts, ‘verbals’, and ‘birthday skates’.
Let’s thank the coaches, assistant coaches, managers and volunteers for their time and hard work over the long hockey season.
Let’s be aware of the level our child should be playing at - no more AA players playing A, or AAA players playing AA.
Let’s support fellow parents who find out their child is not invited back to his/her team, a month before the end of the season.
Let’s all keep our word, where a handshake agreement is the same as ‘etched in stone’.
Let’s all just remember that it is still all ‘about the kids’ - good competition, teamwork and fair play.

LAST NIGHT WHILE WATCHING THE LEAFS GAME…

I saw Connor Carrick commit a massive giveaway in his own end that led directly to the Dallas Stars’ go-ahead goal late in their game.
I almost couldn’t contain my rage – me being a life long Leafs’ fan, but when I looked at my son,
all I could think about was how many times I have chastised him for similar ‘giveaways’.
This guy, Connor Carrick is a professional hockey player. He makes millions of dollars a year (or in his case, hundreds of thousands of dollars a year).
He has played at the highest levels of hockey for about 20 years, and HE STILL MAKES MAJOR MISTAKES ON THE ICE!!!
So for all of us, next time our child doesn’t make the ‘proper’ play, maybe we (meaning me) should remember that even pros mess up big time.
Hockey is such a ‘fluid’ game, so it is hard to teach a kid what the ‘right’ play is in every situation. They really just have to learn things ‘organically’,
until they can ‘read’ situations and hopefully make good plays….but even after 20 years of experience,
and world-class coaching (see Mike Babcock), pros/kids still make major mistakes…gotta love this game!
